چکیده

The characteristics of directionally selective cells in area 17 of the cat are studied using moving random pixel arrays (RPAs) with 50Y0white and 50Y0black pixels. The apparent motion stimulus is similar to that used in human psychophysics [Fredericksen et al. (1993). VisionResearch,33, pp. 1193–1205]. We compare motion sensitivity measured with single-step pixel lifetimes and unlimited pixel Iifetimes. A motion stimulus with a single-step pixel lifetime contains directional motion energy primarily at one combination of spatial displacement and temporal delay. We recorded the responses of complex cells to different combinations of displacement and delay to describe their spatio-temporal correlation characteristics. The response to motion of RPAs with unlimited lifetime is strongest along the preferred speed line in a delay vs displacement size diagram. When using an RPA with a single-step pixel lifetime, the cells are responsive to a much smaller range of spatial displacements and temporal delays of the stimulus. The maximum displacement that still gives a directionally selective response is larger when the preferred speed of the cell is higher. It is on average about three times smaller than the receptive field size. 01997 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Responses of Complex Cells in Cat Area 17 to Apparent Motion of Random Pixel Arrays

The characteristics of directionally selective cells in area 17 of the cat are studied using moving random pixel arrays (RPAs) with 50% white and 50% black pixels. Orientation dependency for foveal line stimuli: detection and intensity discrimination, resolution, orientation discrimination and Vernier acuity

Thresholds were measured for five tasks: line detection, intensity discrimination, two-line resolution, vernier acuity and line-orientation discrimination. For each task, 30 arcmin lines were presented foveally in eight retinal meridians to assess similarities in orientation anisotropies across tasks in the same observer. Three observers were tested. The pattern of the orientation anisotropy di...

The time-course of pop-out search

Olds, Cowan and Jolicoeur [2000. Tracking visual search over space and time. Psychonomic Bulletin & Review (in press)] interrupted pop-out search by adding distractors to a display after a delay. They analyzed the response time distributions from conditions with different delays for interruption and showed that when pop-out search fails, its partially completed computations can be used to assis...

Orthogonal adaptation improves orientation discrimination

We investigated the effect of adaptation on orientation discrimination using two experienced observers, then replicated the main effects using a total of 50 naïve subjects. Orientation discrimination around vertical improved after adaptation to either horizontal or vertical gratings, but was impaired by adaptation at 7.5 or 15 degrees from vertical. Improvement was greatest when adapter and tes...

Impaired Retinal Function in Young Labrador Retriever Dogs Heterozygous for Late Onset Rod-Cone Degeneration

Xenon-flash d.c.-electroretinograms were recorded from dark adapted, rod-cone degenerate homozygote affected (n = 6), heterozygote carrier (n = 3) and control retinas (n = 4) at 3 and 4 months of age, starting at 0.6 log units below control PII threshold. One log unit higher stimuli were necessary to evoke PII in heterozygote and affected retinas compared to controls. Unique to the heterozygote...
